All smokers have noticed that a cigarette seems to soothe the pangs of hunger at least temporarily. The sensation of hunger is caused by contractions of the stomach walls and smoke can inhibit such contractions. Smoking can also cause sharp stomach pain and gastritis by favoring the accumulation of acid secretions thereby creating a condition favoring ulcer development.
